HISTORY

What is now Tanzania was a German colony known as German East Africa from about 1880 to 1919. Was under control of the United Kingdom between 1919 and 1961. Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form Tanzania on 26 April 1964. The one-party rule ended in 1995, when it held its first democratic elections in the country since 1970.

The famous Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanganyika departed intriguing evidence on the prehistory of the area, including fossil remains of some of the earliest ancestors of mankind. Findings suggest that East Africa may have been the place where human beings appeared.

It is believed that the area was inhabited by ethnic groups who spoke languages with similar sounds to those of the Bushmen and Hottentots of South Africa. Although there are still remnants of these early tribes, most of them were displaced by Bantu farmers who migrated west and south and Nilotic and other related peoples of the north. Some of these groups formed well-organized societies and controlled large areas until the time when Arab traders, European explorers and missionaries penetrated the interior in the first half of the nineteenth century.
